Bullies have existed since time immemorial, and they still exist everywhere, from the workplace to the community, and as always, in the schoolyard.
It would be nice if that unpleasant reality of interpersonal relations could be eliminated, but the question is how.
Bullies don’t usually respond to reason or cajoling, but they often do respond to brute force. Many of us remember being tested by the school bully, finally standing up to him and planting a solid punch right on his nose, and suddenly seeing the bully turn into a reasonable, even pleasant human being. This applies to raising kids in general, where the bully child constantly tests the parent and sometimes only responds to brute force rather than cajoling and pleading.
The problem is that liberals and lefty politicians have fallen for the whole “self esteem” movement, so kids are given way too much power and never experience a reprimand more forceful than a “time out.” And to make sure that is so, laws have been passed so that any discipline more forceful that “let’s reason together, Johnny,” or “please go to your quiet spot Susie” is seen as violent child abuse, to be punished by incarceration or having the children removed from the parents care. Now a new city ordinance in Shawano, Wisconsin puts parents in a double bind, and there is a good deal of confusion and disagreement about how fair the ordinance is.

Parents can’t teach their children difference between right and wrong, then hit them where it hurts most, the wallet!
What exactly is the due process involved before any fines are assessed? While this may sound like a good idea on the surface, this is the sort of thing that can quickly gain momentum in the wrong direction and create a whole new form of governmental abuse of power.
It’s ALL about money for gov’ts !!!
This is the stupidest thing I’ve seen yet!
GOOD because u know what if YOUR kid BEATS UP MY KID YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MY KID’S MEDICAL BILLS AND NOT ONLY THAT BUT IF YOUR KID BULLIES MY KID AND BEATS HIM UP THATS CALLED ASSAULT AND I’D WANNA PUT YOUR KID IN JAIL FOR ADULTS.
Lawrence Minnick You are correct, bullying is not right BUT…Big picture: how often is it that the actual bad person says that the other person is a bully, and in doing so gets rewarded unfairly? Do you want to put that power in the hands of school personnel who often are misguided (think common core, testing, gender issues, islamic teaching but not christian teaching)? What the school says automatically becomes fact with no inquiry, no proof? are you seriously advocating that?? And what about the working poor ? Should a family do without meals or be adversely financially impacted or lose their home to pay for a fine that might be someone’s personal values or “agenda” because noone can question or counteract the school’s imposition of a fine? Suspension is the correct response,,, and if the school is wrong in their “judgement” then the kid and the family are better off homeschooling or finding a “better” school.
Linda – I hear your concerns, even though you get a little extreme suggesting that a fine of probably not more than a hundred dollars, is going to make such a financial burden. I don’t think that is the case.
But, your concerns exist in the present circumstance already. Obviously there has to be some evidence and even witnesses But, thing I like about the fine is that the penalties are lessened and the problem of bully’s can be addressed at a younger age.
In other words keep beating the poor man down . And that mindset dont needbe in this country to much government now . Keep putting kids inthe system like that and you will create a real nadty word down the road.
Laws laws and more laws smh.
