Previously, Virginia Democrats had introduced similar bills but were not successful because Republicans had ruled the legislature for decades.
Newly empowered Democrats have been busy this legislative session, passing a slate of progressive bills that include abortion access, LGBT rights, collective bargaining for unions, marijuana decriminalization and other legislative activity.
They’ve also passed a package of gun control measures, which include a ban on the sale of “assault weapons.”
With this much change coming so quickly to a formerly conservative state, it will be interesting to see how the election unfolds this fall and if a backlash might show up at the ballot box.
