The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
Maybe that is why they are trying to repeal this ammendment, so they can get a foot in the door to repeal the 2nd. I don’t trust any of them.
Congress could only start the process with a 2/3 vote in each house. It would still take a 3/4 vote of all state legislatures. Long process. Repealing is the same as amending as far as the process goes.
If they repeal one the rest wont be far behind…be carefull what you ask for, you may get it…..
The first nine amendments are un changable. they are the bill of rights and they apply to all states period.
Pay attention Utah! Look up the 17th Ammendment, get informed this man is trying to screw you and the rest of us will have
Notice how the powers of the Sovereign States are protected in the Constitution. No State may be divided without its consent. No federal land may be purchased in a State without its consent. A State’s representation in the US Senate cannot be reduced without its consent. The federal government can’t act to quell domestic violence within a State without its permission. An “amendment” is a correction that “mends” the Constitution. The 17th Amendment isn’t a correction, it is a redesign of the structure of the federal system that impacts the rights of every State. This would have to be done by getting a new Constitution ratified, not by a simple “amendment” and every State would have to agree.
I don’t want the current AL (GOP Supermajority) electing anyone for any office. They’re destroying this state as it is and they should not be given any more authority.
“…supposed to…” How’s that working out for ya?
This would only be a good idea if state legislators actually represented the people. In today’s world, all politicians are the puppets of their major campaign donors.
It’s a great start
leave the constitution alone you mfs
