The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
No this would be terrible since major cities already control politics and most lean liberal. The rest of the state would be left out in the cold every time.
No
Agreed direct elections are too open to mob rule which is what the framers wanted to avoid I have believed this amendment should be repealed for the good of the United States
I agree on this one. The 17thA took the power away from the States.
I agree, I love the ole fashion way!
It needs to be repealed. This would insure that the will of the people rather the will of the elites! Those crooks should wear sponsorship jackets!
To take away the voice of the people is tyranny. This is expected from democrats, but Utah? Not unlike the rigged system to ensure Hillary the nomination. The problem isn’t letting the people vote, the problem is the sickness in the media, indoctrinating the people.
This is a power grab. The Utah legislature wants to receive the lobby money. Big business will continue to buy politicians and politicians will continue to take the money.
Jay Kane the 17th was the perfect path from our republic to their democracy. They took the power away from the people and gave themselves the majority.
Would be nice, but they have their power and will never willingly give it up.
