The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
For some reason people vote for politicians with certain agendas. The politician shouldnt have those. They are elected to represent their voters will and not their own personal agendas.
A step in the right direction.
The system was meant so the house represent the people, the senate represents the state and the president represent the federal government. Instead we now only have two sides of government Republican and Democrat and the people no longer have a say.
Surprising for Utah.
good read
17th amendment is a disaster. The states lost their representation when it was passed in 1913.
Not only does the 17th need to be repealed to give States their original voice in the Government, but the 14th needs to be redefined to overturn SCOTUS overreach. The SCOTUS has included in the 14th words and other amendments that are not mentioned in the 14th. The 14th was about Slavery and Slaves: nothing more.
It is not “dangerous” to return the Constitution back to the Founders Original Intent. The Original Intent was for limited government under the control of the People and the States. Both controls have been lost. We badly need an Article V Convention if our country is to be saved.
The congress can’t repeal anything. It takes the vote of the people by state to repeal anything in the constitution- jackasses
The 2nd Amendment is part of the Bill of Rights and is an unalienable right. The 17th doesn’t have that distinction.
