The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
The 17th Amendment undermined the political process, and resulted in more power for the Federal Government, and less for the states and the people. This bad idea came from the same generation that gave us income tax.
What the hell do you think Clinton did…everything wrong in America is not all bushes fault..
Fucking moron.
Another person who has no clue how the process and the right to amend the Constitution works.
I concur with them that the people are easily fooled, but the idea that the state elected officials are more virtuous than the people in general is wrong. Senators will still have their tenure based on who they know and their political clout.
Long overdue
The 14th and 15th were illegally ratified and should be repealed …
I agree that I do NOT know a lot about revising the Constitution or many other aspects of our government. I only know from reading history that once a government manages to remove individual rights from their “subjects”, (see history of Germany, in particular) in whatever way it is accomplished, at least certain segments of that society are headed for a collapse. Socialism in any form takes rights from one group of individuals and bestows the product onto another group that does not deserve it. This is done in so many ways that most people don’t realize it until it is too late. Our present administration in Washington is accomplishing this via “presidential actions” or “executive orders”, either one accomplishing the same thing….taking some part of our individual liberty to bestow unearned benefits onto another group of individuals.
Agree
Their time would be better spent working on a Constitutional Conventtion and an amendment setting Term Limits for Senators and Congressmen….PROBLEM SOLVED actually both problems solved!!!!
And while they’re at it, take out the 16th.
