The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
So you are one who doesn’t want to abide by the Constitution;; you’re a member of the destructive party.
By repealing this amendment you take away the power of the people and place it in the hands of the state politicians. This does not give fair representation. Im a republican and live in a state that is Democrat majority in the at the state congresional level. But putting the election of our Fed. Senators in the hands of state legislatures you remove my power to elect a Republican Fed. Senator. The party with the majority in three state house would always elect Senators from their party. Besides, I don’t think you could get 3/5 of the states to ratify this.
How do you people think Rhett states don’t have a say. You elect your senators not federal government or three state government. The easy way too fix this is to not allow them to take money from outside the state.
Don that’s not true. Angry amendment can be repealed by by the States. How do you think they ended prohibition. Come on.
This didn’t give the feds power. You still elect your Fed. Senators. Bu repealing the 17th you make them beholden to the party that has control of the State and not too the people. The people would no longer elect them.
Why do you need to start insulting Patty Miller. You just lost the argument by calling everyone who doesn’t agree with you mindless stooges.
It won’t give control back to the people, it well give it to the State Legislatures and take away my right to vote for the person I want to represent me as a Fed. Senator on Washington. The problem isn’t special Interest groups. They don’t vote. The problem is we the people will not vote the Senators out of office when they don’t do what we want.
hmmm. very good food for thought,,,isn’t it????
Yes
They can go home as often as they like, as long as they pay their own way. Their salaries are exhobitant. No more money. We should also revoke all pensions. Put them into social security like the rest of America.
