The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
We need it repealed
It’s not term limits corrupting politicians…it’s bribery from corporate lobbyists
They need 6stop expanding the federal government and taking away the states authority to govern themselves…
Our system of government wasn’t designed to be controlled by the few in federal government….it was designed so each individual state was sovereign to govern themselves….not be micromanage and assurped by the federal government on every matter
The government get its just powers from the consent of the governed, which is the people. Silence is considered consent according to the government. When you take a plea agreement you take the consent from the people and consent to the laws of the government by your own vote. The government needs the people’s permission to prosecute in both felony and misdemeanor cases, felony cases need to be approved by a grand jury. Not very many cases make it to jury trial rendering consent from the governed. Jury duty is the people’s right and responsibility to consent or nullify all laws. And since America is a republic and not a democracy the majority doesn’t rule. In all but 2 states 1 juror can hang a jury. Research jury nullification.
17th needs to be repealed
This could be the start of the end. Repeal one and it can open the door to repeal them all. Like our second. I understand this would help with crooks but what is good for the goose can be good for the gander
I’m in favor of the State’s repealing the 17th if they follow process
Repealing the 17th amendment would greatly help to restore states’s rights.
Wow, just … wow. The comments in here. Good for Utah, we need more states to do the same thing to get the process rolling.
I cannot believe the gross ignorance of many of the people. The HoR was always meant to be the People’s house, whilst the Senate was supposed to be the State house, representing the individual states. The 17th coopted this intent as a power grab by the “progressive” left. It’s an abomination, and should be repealed.
