The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
I don’t think they are saying that repealing the 17th ammendment has anything to do with the 2nd ammendment issues..I believe the point is once they start repealing ammendments it will open the door for them to be able to go after other ammendments because the precedent will be set
Jonathan Dodge – Do you understand how the amendment process work? Congress writes the amendment and the states ratify it. This used to be taught in grade school civics. :-/
Nullifying the 17th amendment would be fantastic as it would make Senators accountable to the states that put them there.
Amen and hallelujah!
He is an idiot just starting something to cause tension between all races.
‘Truthandaction’ done…
I got what Blake was saying
They can’t just take amendments away easily, if you didn’t realize, it takes a majority of all 50 states to pass or repeal an amendment
Nothing like trying to change the rules in the middle of the election because things didn’t go your way
Vote this n out
Amending the Constitution to return the Senators being elected by the States (legislatures) brings back representation to the “States” interests and doesn’t allow the public “emotional ” vote to dictate policy. It was a check and balance that needs to return.
