The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
My question is this; Are the state legislators just trying to get to “Flip The Script” so that they can get in on some of thar sweet “Special Interest” money. Special intrest will keep the people that will maintain the flow of Federal money into their coffers, no matter what. If they have to pay off people in state legislatures to keep that cash coming in, they will. They will probably save money in the long run.
There would still be problems for the simple fact that state senator’s and representatives all the way down to the local level are just as corrupt as the feds.
We Louisianian’s know this all too well….
YES! This is a great first step towards returning our republic back to what the founders envisioned it to be! Bravo Utah.
You need to educate yourself pal. There are two ways to amend or repeal parts of the constitution. One is through Congress and then to the states for a vote. The other is a convention of the states and then a vote of the states.
Two extremely intelligent posts! I wish more people understood the reason why the founders did not want the Senate to be subject to direct elections. It was the early “progressives” who pushed the 17th amendment through knowing that it would give the federal government more power over the states.
Is he Muslim?
How about repealing the Utah senate and firing them voters.
Here is a BETTER idea. Get rid of the entire House and Senate at the Federal level. Replace it with the members from the state legislatures as THEIR civic duty to the Nation.
We can then gut those salaries, privileged pay raises not granted by the people, and force these as hats to live within a budget.
Anybody who was on this page please go to Convention of States.com there are sixteen amendments to the Constitution that I believe 13 states have already voted on and passed petition the United States Senate for a Convention of states get informed get knowledge and start waking people up
