The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
Jonathan Dodge For sure someone is confused. Just because just about anyone can propose a change. Getting it ratified is a different thing. That requires super majorities in Congress, and ratification by the States. Well at least it is supposed to be that way. However, regarding the 16th amendment, it has never been ratified by the States but we still pay income tax!
The USA used to be and is supposed to be a Republic
Michael LeFevre Maybe but when it comes to raw corruption, your best bet is still Washington DC lol
The idea of a group of corrupt individuals choosing who represents me over someone that the majority chooses is crazy.
I do agree on term limits for Congress. And stop giving millionaires pension FOR LIFE. Make it so there isn’t even a term, career politicians.
But, in the end, we keep re-electing those crooked bastards. Some people love being screwed over.
The 17th amendment stripped the States of so much power. I can’t believe the States did this to themselves in 1913. Educate yourself on 1913 and the birth of Fedzilla. The Federal Reseve Act; 16th Amendment (income tax); 17th amendment ( direct election of Senators instead of appointed by Each State) all implemented in 1913. Anything that returns the States power is a plus. Too many metropolitan population center control the Senatorial elections. The founders were very conscious of geographical representation. There will be less raping of the Federal Treasury when Senators represent their state legislatures…there is too much money being given in entitlements so they can stay in office. States get your rights back…
Good idea, you think.
Stop f#$king with THE DAMN CONSTITUTION!!!!
Mark, the Senate was created to represent the state, the house for the people. That is why Senators we originally selected by the state government.
Okay truth and action I’m done with you I can never read your fucking posts. People have time and time and time again told you to use a larger print so they can read it. I am now I’m unfollowing you because you won’t listen. It’s a really simple thing to do all you have to do is pick a larger print. Seriously can you read your own articles? You listen about as well as the Congress people you complain about. You should run for office
AMEN that piece of garbage should have never been added…..WHAT WERE THEY THINKING
