The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
An OUTSTANDING idea.
Robert Walter; The 17th ammendment is the reason that you, and all eligible citizens, can vote for your U.S. Senators. If it is repealed, U.S. Senators will be appointed by the state legislatures. Now THAT will be a recipe for bribery, panderism and nepotism. THATS WHY THEY PASSED THE 17TH AMENDMENT!!!!!!!
Way over due!!!
It was NEVER RATIFIED by the proper amount of States!!!
But Tom, the House or Rep is termed…”the peoples house” – because they are directly elected by the citizens. That’s what the design was for. The Senate was to represent the “State” via the legislature that was elected by the “people” of that
State. The entire 17th was a complete sham as much as the 16th Amendment was and both need to be repealed…:)
And you’re an idiot Congress cannot repeal amendments
No dumbass
That sounds like a good way to buy your way in. I want to be on that committee.
Tom Butler it was a check & balance between States rights & People’s rights.
Tom Butler Yes Exactly and when that Senator was not doing as the State (People of that state) wished the STATE Government could have the Senator removed. And that is why the Federal Government now has more Power then the States. Which of course is not what the Founding Fathers intended.
