The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
It’s easy to buy off a US Senator who runs for reelection. It’s hard to buy off a whole State Legislature. Senators need to represent their states.
We need a Convention of States to return Constitutional government.
Get back on your meds. You really do not comprehend what you are saying. When you call for a Convention of the States you open up the entire Constitution to be changed. A single incident which temporarily changes the mindset of the country could end up permanently eliminating current rights. A convention of the states is too wide open with an increased chance of radical changes which normally would not be possible. It is a nuclear option that should never be used unless all other options have been exhausted.
No one can be this stupid. Before the 17th amendment it was up to the individual states as to how the Senators were selected. Most of the time the governors and their cronies picked the Senators. Do you really want to take the process out of the hands of the voters and give it back to corrupt politicians.
Better yet create term limits for all of the DC Elite.
sorry but i think your wrong repeal of the 17 amendment would make them answer to the people of their state and not the lobbiest
It is about time!
Rockin Jimmay Breath of fresh air! Thank you!
About damn time…………..17A and 16A need to GO…….and the 14A could use a little clarification between INVOLUNTARY physical traits and behavior CHOICES.
Great news.
They repealed the 18th Amendment (prohibition) without any adverse consequences. The 17th should be repealed also to return sovereignty to the states.
