The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
Geesh they already have Orrin Hatch in the U S Senate. God forbit that it should be filled with clones of him
Get em out of dc
Isn’t the government of the United States supposed to be a government OF the people, FOR the people, and BY the people???
Aren’t US Senators PART of that government???
So…how is the Senate a body of legislators for the STATE governments???
The US Senate was comprised to balance the power in the legislative branch, including the president. It’s like a another set of checks and balances.
It should be repealed but it won’t be. You honestly think the sitting senators are going to approve a measure that would remove them from office and allow the people to vote on it? They will commit suicide before they willingly give up their cash cow.
About time!
About time. Return the allegiance of the Senate to the States they serve.
Here again you need to do your homework. The Representatives were voted in by, and represented the People. The number of reps are a proportional ratio to the People .The Senate represented the State and there are only two per State.it was a counter-balance it case the People got fat stupid and lazy and voted that the State should support them free of charge , or wanted the State to take on responsibilities that were not with in its scope of power granted to it.
It’s about time.
The framers where very concerned about the vote of the people. They felt they could be easily manipulated (huh, how profound). Look online for Madison’s Journal of the Constitution. Fascinating read. You can also read the Federalist and AntiFederalist papers as well as Federal Farmer.
Rocky, though I agree with you on you assertion of the Senate and repealing an Amendment, this is definitely one that needs to be Amended. Trying to change one in the Bill of Rights is a totally different in my opinion and I believe that if Congress every tries to change or Amend the 2nd Amendment they would be one helluva fight on their hands! The Founding Father’s did get it right by having the Senator’s be selected by the State Governments of each state and it’s pretty easy to see why. History is and will always be a great teacher and even back then the Founding Fathers knew what would happen!
