The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
and Don, you do understand, the U.S. is suppose to be a representative republic…..not a democracy. Which would be mob rule. The Founders, knew what they where doing.
Hell yeah !!! Need to repeal both XVI and XVII.
Bill Boswell: I think the state legislatures would love to take back control over their Senate selection, and move it away from the people at large. One of the problems we have with the two houses is that they are both elected by the people in popularity contests, with less ans less attention being paid to the records of the representatives.
The States have lost their voice in the federal government, and it should be returned to the founders’ original intent.
The Bill Of Rights is the ROCK on which the Constitution stands… IT cannot be changed while the rest are supposed to clarify the meaning of being equal and are in cases somewhat over reaching, they can be repealed. The 18th is one you could look at and question as well …
The 17th amendment should be left as it is. Repealing it will encourage more corruption and backroom deals which we already have enough of.
And tell me how this is good for the country? So we can have more backroom deals and corruption????? This also nationalizes state legislature elections which is NOT a good thing
If you think the legislatures would be any better at selecting senators your off your rocker. Every one of them would be pushing to get more pork, federal money, and goodies back to their district. We already have enough of that going on in D.C we dont need anymore.
Well, because it is embodied in the Constitution, it is by definition, “constitutional”, as is the 17th amendment. As bad as both alterations were, they were done constitutionally. Which was precisely why the constitution was made intentionally difficult to amend.
No, pay attention. This gives co and ownership over lands in the borders of the State to the State, like is was deem to be by the laws of the country. It will eliminate the back room DC deals and keep control and accountability local as is was intended to be.
You don’t know, or don’t understand the intended powers of the position of the Senate Seat. They were supposed to be the representative for the State to balance the representative of the People. What you complain about is a direct result of apathy of a stupid and lazy People.
