The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
I’ll bet he does
No – absolutely not. Just another way to have legislators in Washington that are not elected by the people. They will be elected by the State Senators. The voting laws changed somehow and now the “party officials can just decide not to have a primary election and just give the delegates to whoever they want. No vote from the people equals no voice from the people. Now Utah wants to take the people out of the vote for the Senators that are supposed to represent them in Congress. AGAIN, I SAY NO. It is an easy matter to just make a law to prohibit lobbyists since that is this guy’s main complaint. I said a long time ago that lobbyists should be banned from politics so elected officials would be more inclined to listen to their constituents.
Congress cannot unilaterally repeal any amendment. Congress can only propose. It takes three fourths of the States to agree to repeal or amend any provision of the Constitution. See Article V of the Constitution.
NO NO NO WAY this mans an idiot liberal
The election of senators should remain with the people…. we the people might be stupid and elect corrupt representitives… but it’s hell of better the letting the chickens maintain control of the coup…. the next step they would go for a life time in office (which some may already be walking dead)…
Absolutely! Repealing ammendments is well within the authority of the states. This one in particular needs to be repealed, along with the 16th ammendment.
Lol
This is how the Constitution was written. The Senate was a check on federalism to maintain states rights. Senators were beholden to the states to keep office. No ore blackmailing states into compliance by withholding funding for schools or roads
In Mississippi, the result of the passage of the 17th Amendment was the election of our two notorious race baiting Senators — James K. Vardaman and Theodore G. Bilbo.
I have always said this should happen. The idea of the Senators having to answer to the State Legislature and the public is a far better option. Money is a real problem and right now they are all going in broke and coming out millionaires. There is something wrong with that idea.
