5. U.S. Infected Guatemalans With STDs

Guatemala in the 1940s turned out to be a test-bed for experiments to determine the effectiveness of penicillin in curing syphilis. But first they needed a proper sample of test subjects, so they began with infected prostitutes released on unknowing prison inmates, insane asylum patients, and soldiers. The spread of the disease  was unsatisfactory to the U.S. researchers, so they tried a different tactic: inoculation with the disease!

In some cases, men were even inoculated via spinal injections. With their experimental sample population ‘properly’ infected, the researchers applied the treatment they meant to test, but as many as 1/3 of the infected may have been left untreated!

In 2010 Hillary Clinton made an official apology for the events, but it is likely that the untreated spread the disease to their descendants in some cases.
