Laurel Hubbard, a transgender athlete from New Zealand, made sports history by winning a women’s weightlifting competition in Australia on March 19.
The 39-year old (born a male) won the women’s over 90 kilogram (kg) division at the Australian International competition in Melbourne. In the process Hubbard set four unofficial national records by lifting a combined total of 268 kg. That performance bested silver medalist Iuniarra Sipaia of Somoa by 19 kg.
Learn more about what Hubbard plans to do in future international events and what it could mean for increased transgender competition in women’s sports. It’s on the next page.
