Transgender New Zealander Wins Australian Women’s Weightlifting Competition

Laurel Hubbard, a transgender athlete from New Zealand, made sports history by winning a women’s weightlifting competition in Australia on March 19.

The 39-year old (born a male) won the women’s over 90 kilogram (kg) division at the Australian International competition in Melbourne. In the process Hubbard set four unofficial national records by lifting a combined total of 268 kg. That performance bested silver medalist Iuniarra Sipaia of Somoa by 19 kg.
