Mason, with the curly blond mop and hazel eyes, was only 16-months-old when he died in a hit and run accident. On August 30th, the Roten family was driving in Walkertown, North Carolina, when a black Chevy Impala crossed the center lane into the path of their truck. Mason’s dad swerved to miss the impending head-on collision. The truck truck flipped and hit a tree, which fell on the their vehicle, crushing little Mason.
An Elkin High School alumni made and installed a bench near the playground at the Elkin Municipal Park. Each week Mason and his brother would play at the playground. Heather, Mason’s mom said, “They had a blast down here… He was just a joyful little boy.” The bench meant so much to the family and was engraved with Bible verses and crosses to memorialize their happy baby.
The bench vanished from the park because of the religious emblems on city property. Follow more of the story on page two.
ML what am I whining about? I haven’t even offered an opinion on the situation have I? ALL I have done is point out the legality of the situation and the facts. How does that make me a whiny liberal exactly?
Steve who exactly is this bigoted against? If there is a rule in place that says no religious symbols…how do you determine if a rule is bigoted or just a rule? Wouldn’t you have to know the motivation behind it first?
Sickning
Which story is true, the people who installed the bench say they had approval from parks and rec and Don Johnson says they did not have approval and he did not have prior knowledge. Which is it. I am glad to hear that they are discussing where it can be placed. Hopefully near where he liked to play.
Don Johnson I see where you are coming from!
Thanks April, all I did was quote the article and show the ordinance that the family ignored, said that it could have been handled better….and some how that means I am “destroying the country”, a “low life”, and a “whiny liberal.”.
Charles all I did was QUOTE THE ARTICLE when the park said the family did not have approval. So it is the Park that is saying that….not me. Just want to be clear.
Don Johnson, no problem there Don. I just wondered which story was true. Kind of a he said/she said thing. Hope they do work it out and the bench is placed where the boy played.
That is heartless
Due process to install the bench is one thing, removing it because what is written is quite another. How ignorant and uncaring are the people in that city.
