It’s always good to have some clean, drinkable water stored as a backup in case something goes wrong with the city supply, but what happens when that runs out? If you’re prepared with one of these easy-to-make water filtration systems you won’t need to worry!
This video shows how to make and use the home made Berkey type water filtration system. This one is made for less than $35 in parts and you will see that it will turn the nastiest of Oklahoma water in to clean SAFE drinking water in a reasonable amount of time. This system is NOT super fast (yet…give me time) but it will clean 5 gallons of drinking water in about 24 hours (Website says 14 per day) . I believe that I may have figured out how to speed that up to 5 gallons in an hour or so, stop back and see it I make that work. This DOES NOT make water drinkable without boiling or adding chlorine or bleach, however in a pinch it would beat drinking it straight out of the river. This works GREAT and is SOOO much cheaper than the store bought systems that do the same thing.
Interesting
going to cost you more than 35 for how he shows you… just saying
I made one of these with a Berkey filter, but I used food grade buckets that were BPA free. It defeats the purpose to filter water into a chemically laden bucket.
Take a pair of blue jeans and put the legs inside of each other and tie the cuffs in a knot. Then fill it ⅓ of the way up with carbon/charcoal dust. Fill the rest up with fine sand. You now have a almost free filter that you can drink out of but boiling it is just extra insurance against illness.
ok there are methods that differ… I do recommend the Berkley… and the straw too but depends on the circumstances for each… one id for immediate safe hydration the other for longer termed, stay in place hydration
.
the safest drinking water comes from pressed carbon reverse osmosis filters outside of just boiling water… but it is pricey and for more permanent living situations… for what it’s worth… once properly washed… gravel, sand and activated charcoal would be ideal for bug out survival sceniaros
Don’t forget, all hot water tanks have a bottom spigot for draining them and most hold 40 gallons of water you can drink. Let it cool first.
And rather than worry about bug in the water. Remember, filters will not filter out virus’s. Keep one gallon of unscented chlorine bleach on hand. Add about 16 drops per gallon to sterilize the water. Takes about a minute to make it safe to drink.
