It’s always good to have some clean, drinkable water stored as a backup in case something goes wrong with the city supply, but what happens when that runs out? If you’re prepared with one of these easy-to-make water filtration systems you won’t need to worry!
This video shows how to make and use the home made Berkey type water filtration system. This one is made for less than $35 in parts and you will see that it will turn the nastiest of Oklahoma water in to clean SAFE drinking water in a reasonable amount of time. This system is NOT super fast (yet…give me time) but it will clean 5 gallons of drinking water in about 24 hours (Website says 14 per day) . I believe that I may have figured out how to speed that up to 5 gallons in an hour or so, stop back and see it I make that work. This DOES NOT make water drinkable without boiling or adding chlorine or bleach, however in a pinch it would beat drinking it straight out of the river. This works GREAT and is SOOO much cheaper than the store bought systems that do the same thing.
Anything larger than a point 1 micron filter and you still need to boil or chemically treat the water before you drink it. I recommend either a sawyer point 1 for about $50 or if you want lightweight go with the sawyer squeeze. Another good option is the First Need water purifier it is EPA certified as a purification device tot a filter and can be purchased for around $100.
Wow
Good video! I did some research back a few years ago and found out that filtered water is only good stored for up to two years in a plastic container. Then it starts leeching the plastic. Also stored filtered water shouldn’t be stored on concrete. should be shelved on wood. Your system opens up a world of good ideas and possibilities. Good job!

In place of Berkey elements, use a CeraMetix element from Aquacera. Has fluoride removal built in, and catches 70-80% of fluoride while the separate Berkey cartridge only removes 40-50%.
This was my third grade science project
I have been saving water for flushing toilets and doing laundry too. I take every container we empty and rinse it out and fill it with water then put it in the basement.

Berkey fluoride filters remove 95% of fluoride.
I haven’t read all the comments, so someone else may have mentioned this … but bleach is NOT safe for treating water. Bleach contains mercury, the single most toxic natural element known to man. Mercury also vaporizes at room temperature, so it’s quite possible to breathe it in. While most folks can tolerate slight exposures to mercury there are many who can’t and it quite literally can put them in the hospital.
