Ever had to deal with a power blackout during the hot summer months? Then you know just how important keeping cool can be.
Over on The Good Survivalist we found a great tip to save you money and keep you cool:
Seems every year people die due to heat. Keeping your home cool in the summer can be very expensive if you use your air conditioner. This air conditioner is very simple to make, and can be made in a few minutes if you are handy.Even if you are not handy you’ll be able to make one of these DIY air conditioners. One of the nice things about this air conditioner is that it will give you up to 6 hours of coolness. This thing works so well you may need to put on a sweatshirt! To make one of these babies you need a few simple tools, a couple of 5 gallon buckets, along with a few other items. Everything is shown in the video.
The energy required to cool the ice – usually via a Fridge in the house – is substantial. For a fridge to work the extra cycles to cool the water into ice, it churns out more heat. Your fridge is basically a heater for your home.
The more work you ask it to do, the more heat it dumps out.
Thus, according to Newton’s second law, the overall energy consumed (and heat dumped into your apartment) will be greater, using this approach.
In other words: the only way you can get this to cool your space is if the freezer you use is located in a separate, vented space.
I was actually thinking along similar lines, because I live in a very small house. So you’re right, in the house it doesn’t make too much a difference because of the freezer. However, I DO have a shed outside that I use as a workshop. It’s insulated, but I don’t have any sort of cooling system yet. (We just got the property). It has power now for my tools, so I thought about getting an old floor unit. But this would be absolutely perfect for that sort of space! Especially considering I may be out there for long periods of time, I’d like to avoid pulling on the house electricity just to cool a workshop.
Using a solar panel hookup, that is.

I’m lucky I live in Chelan County. I run 2 air conditioning units all day during the summer (we have 2 indoor pets to keep cool) and the electricity bill is about $20/month.
LMAO! If you are just now learning about something like this. IT’S TOO LATE FOR YOU!
This is a great idea 4 all the truckers who don’t have APU’s on their trucks.
Seen it cool I think
