Ever had to deal with a power blackout during the hot summer months? Then you know just how important keeping cool can be.
Over on The Good Survivalist we found a great tip to save you money and keep you cool:
Seems every year people die due to heat. Keeping your home cool in the summer can be very expensive if you use your air conditioner. This air conditioner is very simple to make, and can be made in a few minutes if you are handy.Even if you are not handy you’ll be able to make one of these DIY air conditioners. One of the nice things about this air conditioner is that it will give you up to 6 hours of coolness. This thing works so well you may need to put on a sweatshirt! To make one of these babies you need a few simple tools, a couple of 5 gallon buckets, along with a few other items. Everything is shown in the video.
This a swamp cooler which works great in hot dry climates.
Ah. So it’s not that it doesn’t blow cold air (I would imagine it would at least be cooled off a little bit), but that there isn’t enough cooling to make a difference. Plus, you have the electric fan creating heat from the motor to counteract whatever cooling there is. Thanks!
It reminds me of a time at Tucson Newspapers when the transformer blew up. To keep the electronic typesetters cool, they brought in room a/c units and blew the output directly into the typesetters. It kept *them* cool, but boy, did the room get hot!
Exactly. Some of these things suggest you freeze you’re own ice. Guess where all the heat goes that you remove from the water to freeze it?
Yup, I understand.
No its not. Swamp coolers cool by evaporation. Not much evaporation here. They claim its cooling because the ice is cold.
This was news in summer real useful posting months later in middle of winter lol
In New Mexico, all base housing was equipped with swamp coolers. They added humidity to the very dry air and as it evaporated it cooled the air. Whatever.
This is how I fix a power outage
See thay hanging from the video? Thays a swamp cooler. Works off of evaporation like Gary Szczepanski said
