Ever had to deal with a power blackout during the hot summer months? Then you know just how important keeping cool can be.
Over on The Good Survivalist we found a great tip to save you money and keep you cool:
Seems every year people die due to heat. Keeping your home cool in the summer can be very expensive if you use your air conditioner. This air conditioner is very simple to make, and can be made in a few minutes if you are handy.Even if you are not handy you’ll be able to make one of these DIY air conditioners. One of the nice things about this air conditioner is that it will give you up to 6 hours of coolness. This thing works so well you may need to put on a sweatshirt! To make one of these babies you need a few simple tools, a couple of 5 gallon buckets, along with a few other items. Everything is shown in the video.
You could take it camping if you had electric on hot days
As logical as powering your house with a potato. I get angry every time I see this as a suggested post… I I see a lot of people mentioned that you can’t make ice when the power is out. That is a true statement. Another point is that a refrigeration circuit moves heat. If you put water into the freezer it moves the heat to outside the refrigerator. The heat is rejected by the condenser coil. There is also efficiency loss that makes it a fact that you put more heat into hour living space than what has been removed from the water to create the ice. Another fact is in air conditioning the latent heat removal (removing humidity from the air) makes it feel cooler.
What this dumb devise is claiming is that you can make ice and throw it in a bucket and cool your house. So what that is saying is that your freezer section of your refrigerator has enough capacity to cool all your food and enough extra capacity to add cooling your house….
The most common size of air conditioning units in the area I live is 2.5 ton. That is basically saying that in a 24hr span it can remove as much heat as it takes to melt 2.5 tons of ice in a 24 hour period. You are going to need some larger buckets….
I also am amused that I see people calling their versions of this device their “inventions” lol… I seen one post that the guy said “I feel mine is more efficient because I added a cold air return” lol. Also if you plan on using these, watch for mold because you will be blowing around cool humid air.
I guess this is the original ice bucket challenge. Try to defeat physics with ice and a solar panel.
If you made one of these devices, your highschool science teacher is disappointed in you. Stay tuned for how to heat your house with a bic lighter. Hope you enjoy your arts and crafts project
“Deal with a power blackout” with an electric fan powering the unit!
Let’s make them now
I bet the compressor on your freezer has to run longer to freeze the ice than the AC compressor would run on a conventional AC unit.
Melissa Hardy this is what i was talking about
Dan Ruder,,,,i take it your A/C tech. or a man that understands thermal dynamic’s. I do like your comment but at the same time its comments like these to the general public that we will always be the ones of all the tradesman to be called arrogant. Like u,,,i am very skilled and luv my trade. I also adjust my way of telling my customers as well as the men that i have trained a way that they will understand and not feel like im talking down to them. In other words,,,,its a bucket,,a fan,,and,,sum ice brother,,,not a 2 year lesson in our trade,,,all it is,,,,is,,COOL!! 🙂
