Study Shows Chicago Criminals buy Guns on Street — Not Gun Shows, Online

Liberal politicians often refer to the “gun show loophole,” where individuals at gun shows are not required to run background checks before selling to another individual.  They claim that if gun show sales — along with internet sales — were banned, that murder rates and mass shootings would plummet.  Now, a study by the University of Chicago Crime Lab finds that this is simply not the case.

According to the Chicago-Tribune, Crime lab co-director Harold Pollack said the study shows that “some of the pathways [regarding guns] people are concerned about don’t seem so dominant.” He said very few inmates indicated using gun shows or the internet. Rather, they get the guns in undetectable ways on the street. He said the inmates know they run the risk of being caught by police but “were less concerned about getting caught by the cops than being put in the position of not having a gun to defend themselves and then getting shot.”

The vast majority of the inmates used handguns to commit their crimes or protect themselves, very few cited using “military-style assault weapons.”

Furthermore, the left has sought to ban “assault-style” weapons, but as the study shows, very few criminals actually sought out these types of weapons.  Elected Democrats are likely to ignore this study, as it does not fit into their narrative of all American gun-owners being crazy right-wingers.

Whether they want to acknowledge it or not, the study shows that if gun sales are outlawed or restricted, the only people who will be hurt are those who would listen to those laws in the first place — legal gun owners.
