Author and self-proclaimed ‘sexuality expert’ Deanne Carson likely underestimated the mass ridicule that would follow her suggestion that babies should “give consent” to having their diapers changed by their parents.
Carson, who works with Body Safe Australia, made the comments on an ABC News segment on establishing a “culture of consent” in the home. She suggested one way to establish consent while changing diapers is to use questions such as “I’m going to change your nappy now, is that okay?”
Of course, the ensuing reaction on social media didn’t play in her favor:
… I’ve never been so confused in my life. Teaching children consent is 100% important but come on. You’ve got to be kidding me. A child relies their parent to take care of them and that includes personal hygiene! Esp as toddlers and babies. Sit down git.

All the kids in my family at the age of 2, don't always understand why they shouldn't do certain things (like climbing on everything, running across a road and putting random things in their mouth) but according to Deanne Carson they should consent to a nappy change?

How long do you allow a baby to wallow in their own filth if they decline?

Carson responded to the backlash on her Facebook page, which is currently unavailable. “I gave an interview the other day about teaching consent to young children,” she said. “Sadly, some people have chosen to ridicule me (oh no! Pink hair! Must be a lesbian!) and the notion of giving infants bodily autonomy (poo in nappies har har amiright?!)
“Troll me all you want, add to your blog inches, but remember that when you do, you are negating the voices of these brave survivors of sexual abuse.”
how in the hell does a day old baby give you permission to change its diaper? stop being idiots and get on with your life and let the rest of us live our lives
Just another ridiculous idiot idea…people have turned into complete moronic fools.
An infant doesn’t know that a dirty diaper will hurt their skin or cause discomfort….OMG!
Next will be, do I have permission to feed you or put you to bed…or is that too much control for you lunatics!?
That’s a woman? Or is it some transtesticles ‘mo that wants to use the ladies bathroom out in public? What a dork!
