Sanders’ Wife Tried to Evict Disabled People from Group Home

Jane Sanders served as Burlington College president while Bernie Sanders once was mayor of the town of 42,000 along the banks of Lake Champlain before becoming a senator.

A town noted for its leftist leanings and culture, Burlington didn’t prove as hospitable for the college, which struggled with low enrollment and financial strains. Jane Sanders’ tenure only exacerbated the problems.

In 2010, Mrs. Sanders decided to expand the campus by purchasing 33 adjacent acres. The land was owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington and included a 77,000 square foot facility as well as the group home for the disabled.

The then-president of Burlington College drastically overstated donation amounts in loan applications, according to the Vermont news website that broke the story, to obtain a $10 million loan. Jane indicated there was $2.6 million in pledged donations but the school only got $676,000 in four years.”

Under the terms of the deal, Mrs. Sanders was obligated to arrange the transfer of the disabled people before the college would take over the property.

Email exchanges with the attorney representing the group home clearly indicate Jane Sanders’ heartless attitude toward the residents.

It is simply not fair to expect the College to continue to carry the burden of the expenses associated with housing both your population and ours until February 2012.”

The group home had been leased from the diocese and the agreement specifically stated the college’s responsibility to arrange the transfer of the disabled residents to a suitable alternative.

Jane Sanders decided to retire from the college and was lauded by the college board for her achievements being “transformative.” They certainly were since the college has since gone bankrupt.

The Sanders have hired attorneys in Washington and Burlington to defend them. Senator Sanders is adamantly denying any wrongdoing, including charges that his senatorial office put pressure on the bank to approve the loan. He faces re-election in 2018.

In a full display of chutzpah, the senator accused the investigation of being politically motivated, even though it began under the Obama administration.

‘When you go after people’s wives that is really pathetic,” he said in a recent interview, adding that “it’s fairly pathetic that when people are involved in public life, it’s not only that they get attacked, but it’s their wives and their families that get attacked. That’s what this is about.”

Not to be outdone for sheer brazenness, Jane Sanders has launched The Sanders Institute, a nonprofit organization to “revitalize democracy” by focusing on progressive issues such as social justice, racial justice and the environment.

Sounds like a good way to bilk liberals out of their money.
