While it is not uncommon for foreign air forces to intercept American planes, the tense, even unprofessional nature of this interception was enough for the Pentagon to criticize the Russians’ handling of the situation. With the already-high levels of hostility between the US and Russia at the moment, one can only hope no more incidents like this happen.
“The official said intercepts of American reconaissance flights are common, ‘but this was unusually close,’ which ‘was enough to cause concern.’
‘On January 25, 2016, a U.S. RC-135U flying a routine route in international airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian SU-27 in an unsafe and unprofessional manner,’ said Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza, a Pentagon spokeswoman.”
