Russia Warns of World War Three Starting in Syria

Lack of U.S. Leadership Could Lead to War

The absence of strong leadership in the Middle East and the Syrian civil war has left the area with a huge power vacuum. Iran and Saudi Arabia are both increasing their involvement, and the poor response and planning by the Obama administration allowed the Russians to push into the area in order to control the expansion of ISIS, with many groups cheering to see at least one world leader with the guts and wherewithal  to take on the maniacal Islamic group. This could all have been avoided if the U.S. had developed a more rational, decisive, clear plan, but Obama is known for dithering on the sidelines while he measures the political ramifications of his actions. Foreign ministers of the various states and countries are meeting in Munich and Brussels to try and repair the damage in Syria after the latest round of peace talks collapsed. And most distressing was the word coming from the talks.

Russia warned of “a new world war” starting in Syria on Thursday after a dramatic day in which Gulf states threatened to send in ground forces.

Both Russia and the United States demanded ceasefires in the long-running civil war so that the fight could be concentrated against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) – but each on their own, conflicting terms.

The Gulf states, led by Saudi Arabia, staged their own intervention, saying they were committed to sending ground troops to the country. Their favored rebel groups have been pulverized by Russian air raids and driven back on the ground by Iranian-supplied pro-regime troops.

‘It would be impossible to win such a war quickly, especially in the Arab world, where everybody is fighting everyone’

That means Russia is calculating a long, long stay in Syria and perhaps other Middle Eastern countries. The Middle East has always been a difficult area, in part due to the fractured rule of various war lords and the additional problem of diverse Islamic sects that see all others as enemies and apostates, worthy of death. Now added to the mix is the rise of Russia, with Putin determined to return his country to its former glory as the USSR.

However, Obama has severely and intentionally sought to diminish U.S. power and prestige in the world, and the power vacuum left by that departure from the world stage has invited many new players and plotters, all seeking to expand their own position. Elections have consequences, and the election of Barack Obama has done severe damage, not just to the U.S., but to the peace and prosperity of the world in general. Our only hope, now, is that he will leave the presidency without inflicting even more damage, which could very well include a new world war starting in the Middle East.
