Bush won the electoral college but lost the popular vote, Democrats claimed he “stole” the presidency. Four years later, Bush won the electoral college and the popular vote, but Democrats still resisted. He would never have had a chance to be re-elected if he hadn’t stolen the first election, they would say.
In 2016, it happened again — Trump won the electoral college but not the popular vote — and this time the Democrats could blame Russian interference, too.
