REPORT: Senator John McCain Accused of Causing 1967 USS Forrestal Inferno

ACTUAL VIDEO FOOTAGE OF THE USS FORRESTAL BLAZE

I was able to find this very interesting training video put out by the Department of Defense that used the horrific events of the USS Forrestal’s fire and explosions as a lesson against lackadaisical discipline, poor training, and unfortunate readiness capability that ended up claiming the lives of 134 sailors and airmen.

While the video is meant to instruct sailors and airmen in the Navy about the dangers of not being properly trained and prepared for disaster, it is nevertheless, a significant piece of film with historical value.  The film literally captures the opening moments of the explosion and ensuing blaze, as well as the follow-up explosions of other munitions and gas tanks.  It is a terrifying video and, at times (because of when it was produced) reminds one of a clip out of the original Romero classic “Night of the Living Dead.”

The video runs a full 19 minutes, but is really worth the view because of how scary that day was for all involved.  I honestly had flashbacks of 9/11 while viewing it.  Please take the time to watch it and remember that this is said to have occurred because of the irrational and unnecessary actions of a sitting senator.

While this film doesn’t necessarily indict McCain, it makes a very strange statement in its introduction in the opening minute and a half about secrecy.  For the Navy to be talking about obfuscation seems odd.  Here’s the quote:  “But chances are no one will ever know the full story, even with written testimony, the passage of time has a way of veiling or obscuring important facts.”

Turn to the final page for the conclusion of this sad and revealing story about a man who has made a career out of “veiling and obscuring important facts!”
