Are there any constraints on the Mueller investigation? Or is it free to roam into whatever areas it chooses for as long as it chooses? If the latter is true, where are the investigations into Hillary, Podesta, Wasserman-Schultz, and many more we could include?
Mueller’s investigation was supposed to determine if there was any collusion between the Trump administration and Russian interests during the campaign.
No evidence was found.
So, now what?
It appears that Mueller is on a crusade to find something to accuse President Trump and his associates of regardless of where or when such an event occurred. If that is now the mandate, the investigation will never end.
Exclusive for “First Look”: Axios has learned that special counsel Robert Mueller has focused on events since the election β not during the campaign β in his conversations with President Trump’s lawyers.
- The top two topics that Mueller has expressed interest in so far: the firings of FBI director James Comey and national security adviser Michael Flynn.
- That suggests a focus on obstruction of justice while in office, rather than collusion with Russia during the campaign.
- But both sagas are interwoven with Russia: Trump himself has linked Comey’s firing to Russia, and Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations with the Russian ambassador during the transition.
The Mueller and Trump teams are hoping to work out the specifics of a presidential interview within the next few weeks.
- The big question they’re debating is whether it’ll be in person, in writing, or some combination of the two.
The president is clearly getting fed up with this open-ended investigation turned harassment. And to investigate President Trump for obstruction of justice? Is this some sort of deliberate attempt to make a farce of justice in America? Investigate Hillary and her team first for obstruction of justice and at least 100 other alleged offenses. Then come back and talk about President Trump.
After a weekend of increasingly personal and vocal battles with Mueller, the White House extended an awkward olive branch on Sunday night, with White House lawyer Ty Cobb issuing this statement:
- βIn response to media speculation and related questions being posed to the Administration, the White House yet again confirms that the President is not considering or discussing the firing of the Special Counsel, Robert Mueller.β
- But that’s too late. Veering from the White House legal strategy of cooperating with Mueller, Trump attacked him by name on Twitter, seeking to discredit the eventual findings with Republican supporters.
- Someone familiar with the process said that was presidential frustration, and that the Trump team continues its ongoing dialogue with Mueller.
The question ought to be whether there should be an interview at all, or whether Mr. Mueller and his staff should be dispatched back to “The Swamp” where they came from.
“Thank you for showing that the president is innocent of Russian collusion during the campaign. Now go away.”
That is what should be directed to Mr. Mueller & Company.
