Rep. Gohmert: President Trump is ‘Being Set Up for Failure’ with ‘Ryancare’

In his interview with Breitbart News daily host Alex Marlow, Gohmert noted that the current version relies heavily on the proposed Phase Two in which Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price will use his regulatory authority to implement changes in how the health care law works.

I think the President’s being set up for failure. I know people are anxious just to get this bill passed. We just can’t cave in and say, oh, it’s the best we can do. It’s not the best we can do.

We’re on the brink of disaster or fantastic accomplishment, one or the other. We’ll see how it plays out this week.

Gohmert’s biggest concern that that the regulatory directives that Secretary Price can issue must be done to implement the intent of the law. In this case, if Obamacare is not fully repealed, then the existing law is what must be followed.

He believes any substantive changes that Price makes through regulation will be open to court challenges that could run on for years.

It’s likely the courts will end up having the final say in terms of preserving Obamacare due to the way the bill is written.”

Gohmert argues that Congress has the power to root out Obamacare by “root and branch.” He believes the bill being advanced by Speaker Paul Ryan, and supported by President Trump, is a “lackluster” bill that won’t bring down the cost of health insurance for consumers.

Opposing the bill right now are conservative Republicans like Gohmert in the so-called Freedom Caucus. He has strong concern about the ability of the Ryan legislation to bring about meaningful change.

Gohmert warns that failure to make needed amendments in order to fully repeal Obamacare will run the risk of the bill’s failure in the House of Representatives. Should it instead squeak through and move on to the Senate, Gohmert has doubts about its prospects there.

Obviously a defeat for the American Health Care Act in the House could seriously wound President Trump and place his overall agenda in jeopardy. The President has held numerous White House meetings with members of Congress and traveled to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to make a sales pitch for the bill. At the same time, he’s indicated he remains open to further negotiation to bring reluctant House members on board.
