The Senate blocked the reauthorization of the Patriot Act early Saturday morning with three sections set to expire on May 31st and no clear plan to address the bill beforehand.
Section 215 is what the NSA uses to collect phone data on Americans in bulk – without the reauthorization the NSA will be forced to end their unconstitutional spying.
In addition to blocking the extension of the Patriot Act, the Senate also didn’t pass the USA Freedom Act, although the House did overwhelmingly with a 338-88 vote.
