Chicago mayor, Rahm Emanuel announced a $250,000 fund to support church and community sponsored gun buyback programs in Chicago. This plan comes in the wake of Chicago’s already stringent regulations on gun stores, including an “assault weapons” ban and a “violence tax” on guns and ammunition.
Similar programs have been initiated in various cities in California, Arizona, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and New Jersey. And while the number of weapons exchanged for cash cards varied depending on the city, statistics show that in all cases, these buy back programs have mostly failed to reduce gun violence. In a city like Chicago, where there have been 2,439 shooting victims this year alone, it doesn’t sound like a place you want to live and be unarmed.
