America is rapidly becoming a police state lorded over by an unholy alliance of big government and big business, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the recent practices of a private surveillance company.
Joining forces with police departments across Texas, Vigilant Solutions is providing law enforcement agencies in the Lone Star State with thousands of automated license plate readers (ALPR), in addition to complete access to the company’s information records and data. Incredibly, the company is offering all this for free. Well, free for the police anyway.
See, although law enforcement doesn’t have to pay for all this newfangled equipment, somebody does, and that somebody is Texas motorists. Using ALPRs, officers will be able to intercept drivers with outstanding warrants just by running their license plates into Vigilant’s database, something that should concern privacy advocates everywhere.
On top of this, police plan to install credit and debit card readers in their vehicles so that upon pulling drivers over, they can make them pay not only any potential tickets or fines on the spot, but a 25% service fee for the “convenience” of being able to pay immediately. A fee of course, that goes straight to Vigilant, not law enforcement.
