You can grow 100 pounds of potatoes in a 4 sq ft box with your own ‘potato high rise’. As the potatoes grow you simply add another layer. This particular method is nice in that the author creates interlocking corners in his potato box.
Yes, potatoes are inexpensive, which is why this is probably more for preppers and avid gardeners than anyone else.
To harvest from your box, first access the bottom layer by removing frame’s boards. When you have removed all of the potatoes from that level you replace the soil and reattach the boards. When you want to harvest more you repeat the same steps with the second layer and so on.
Great idea
I knew a guy once who grew a few potato plants in a big pile of grass/lawn clippings and got hundreds of giant potatoes (lawn clippings, are you serious..!!)
Gramma’ did “Tators” it in a huge washtub!!! Haha!! 😀
Jessica Pool potatoes for days 😛
I did this with old tires a few times.
While potatoes are inexpensive, the wisest use of limited garden space is to plant and grow those vegetables which, pound for pound vs. square feet used, will produce the most in the soil allotted.
We have to boxes about 3ft square and 5 ft tall. Full of potatoes.
My dad planted potatoes in a bale of hay that fell apart next to the water trough. He got a whole bushel of potatoes and they were all clean. NO dirt necessary!!
great idea since when commercial potatoes are grown they use lots of insecticides and fungucides
Even though they may be cheap you can make countless different foods with em. Great idea.
