Chicken is America’s number one meat, whether fried, barbecued or broasted, it is delicious. The amount of work it takes to get this tasty bird to one’s table is a something altogether less savory.
In an Oxfam America report, allegations have emerged that the poultry industry workers are poorly treated. In a society that worries about the humane way in which to kill a chicken, the human element has often been overlooked.
In this new report, workers reported that they “routinely were (sic) denied breaks to use the bathroom” in order to optimize the speed of production.” The interviews of hundreds of line workers tell of inhumane conditions forced upon them in order to process the poultry as quickly as possible. Those interviewed worked for Perdue, Tyson Foods and Pilgrims, as well as other poultry processing centers.
One worker interviewed said, “I had to wear Pampers. I and many, many others had to wear Pampers.”
The stories get excessively worse on the following page.
They’re working hard alright.
BS
It’s all a lie. Check the facts yourself. I can only sat that I and my two sisters worked at one of these plucking plants and this never happened. It wasn’t a fun job but we did it. And we didn’t have to work it was for extra money. So do you think we would have stayed if the condition were so deplorable?
I call BS.
Why don’t they just say “no?” Are these the Dark Ages or something? Report it. Get another job. Wtf? Are they chained to their stations? Sounds like bs to me.
We must be the same age :), mom hung them on the side of the barn, throats cut. People now must think chickens kill and dress themselves?
these allegations in this post has not been proven to be true. There were claims of this by anonymous workers but none were confirmed. One of the companies (Perdue) gives workers 2, 30-minute breaks during an 8 hour shift. All are still under investigation
Yes, and the chicken just seem to tast better back then.
It’s the fast food workers asking for $15/hr should be required to wear them.
::Melvin:: My age is 83, but I’m sure that people were still killing their own chickens up to the early 60″s, but only in small towns.
