Kali Wilgus and Liz “LC” Connelly decided to open a burrito shop in Portland, Oregon. Given that this is Mexican cuisine, they decided to take a trip to Mexico to get ideas on how to make really great burritos. What sounds like something that makes perfect sense turned into a nightmare as they were accused of one of the more bizarre offenses you can imagine.
“I picked the brains of every tortilla lady there in the worst broken Spanish ever, and they showed me a little of what they did,” Connelly told Willamette Week. “They told us the basic ingredients, and we saw them moving and stretching the dough similar to how pizza makers do before rolling it out with rolling pins. They wouldn’t tell us too much about technique, but we were peeking into the windows of every kitchen, totally fascinated by how easy they made it look. We learned quickly it isn’t quite that easy.”
Think there is nothing wrong with any of that? In the eyes of the liberal SJWs, the women committed a grievous offense.
Whelp, apparently this interview sparked an Internet shitstorm, which ended in Kooks Burritos shutting down and the two white women who owned it scrubbing social media of the business’ existence.
Wilgus and Connelly were accused of cultural appropriation by the Internet mob, and even the theft of PoC’s recipes.
“Cultural appropriation.” Now there is a new heinous offense we didn’t know existed. It actually sounded like these ladies were being complimentary of their Mexican hosts by wanting to learn from them how to make good-tasting food. Sort of acknowledging the Mexicans’ skill in such matters.
The women became the subject of local editorials and, of course, f[***]ing Mic.com fanned the flames with an article, “These white cooks bragged about stealing recipes from Mexico to start a Portland business.”
The company’s Yelp reviews are flooded with one-star reviews from the PC police, using terms like “white mediocrity” and “Latinx” while comparing Kooks Burritos to colonialism.
Is there something in the water in Portland that causes people to lose their minds? This is nuts.
Soon after the controversy, a list of white-owned “appropriative” businesses began circulating online, featuring some of Portland’s top restaurants. The list also suggested the nearest “PoC alternatives” to each white business.
So to recap, a couple of white ladies learned to make burritos good while on vacation and now they are literally comparable to Hernán Cortés.
Good job, cultural appropriation warriors! You made the world a better place by shutting down a local small business.
Would this imply that any white business dealing in products that have their origin in predominately non-white nations must be closed down? It sounds like that would be the endpoint of the thing.
Note what is absent from this story: any evidence that any of the white-owned businesses were exploiting anyone or were in any way denigrating anyone’s nation or culture. In fact, in the case of the burrito ladies, they were paying a compliment to Mexican culture for producing such a popular food.
None of these things matter to SJWs since they have a single-minded obsession with alleged social injustices. If such injustices do not exist, they will just make them up.
