PETA Wins: Ringling Bros. Circus Closes After Nearly 150 Years

Feld Entertainment, owners of Ringling Bros., announced they’ll no longer be performing circuses after 150 years of productions.

This was hailed by many animal welfare activists as being one of the greatest victories to date for the humane treatment of animals.

PETA and the Humane Society (for animals, not people) of the U.S. see this as a landmark step towards how Americans view the treatment of animals.

PETA is well known for protesting and odds are if you’ve been to the circus in recent years, you’ve seen or heard their activists calling for people to “Boycott the circus”.

Ever since being founded in 1980,”Ringling Brothers was a target of ours from the very beginning” shares Lisa Lange, senior vice president of communications. Lange says PETA members believe they’re the main reason behind the growing public conflict over attending circuses.

Feld Entertainment chairman, Kenneth Feld agrees with PETA.

In announcing the end, Feld Entertainment chairman Kenneth Feld acknowledged the decades of conflict with animal welfare groups.

It leads some to speculate that it will only be a matter of time till other PETA campaigns start to turn into a reality. Anyone ready to start milking some women so cows can finally be given respect without anyone having to give up their favorite Ben and Jerry’s ice cream?
