Donald Trump has quite an array of adversaries to defeat. He has the ones he should expect such as his opponent and her campaign as well as the DNC and interest groups allied with them. He also has to defeat much of the major media that is hostile to his campaign. Unfortunate, but expected and a fact of life.
What he should not have to defeat are those that are supposed to be on his side, such as his own party and prominent leaders within his party. Sadly, he must add those to his list of opponents as well. It’s disgusting.
Paul Ryan has become a lightning rod when it comes to the anger generated against Republican leaders who have equivocated in their support of Donald Trump. And well he should. He’s the Speaker of the House. And he has no apparent problem in stabbing his own party’s candidate for president in the back while warming up to the Democrat. While he unfortunately has company in his acts of political treason, he deserves all the derision he receives from the Republican faithful.
Donald Trump made headlines this week when he questioned whether Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan wanted him to prevail over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
“Maybe not,” Trump told Good Morning America on Tuesday. “Because maybe he wants to run in four years… or maybe he doesn’t know how to win. I mean, who can really know?” Trump said.
Trump is being generous. Ryan needs to be repudiated.
The view that Ryan “doesn’t know how to win,” however, neglects the reality that both Ryan and Clinton share a progressive, globalist worldview, which is at odds with Trump’s “America first” approach. Indeed, both Clinton and Ryan have said that they see themselves as representatives not only for American citizens, but also for foreign nationals and foreign interests.
Clinton and Ryan are both lousy representatives for Americans, and representing Americans is supposed to be their job, incidentally — one at which they have both been willingly derelict. They are both dedicated globalists, meaning they can be counted on to put Americans in line behind the interests of other nations. And it’s not just practice, this “globalist” idea is actually part of their political philosophy — a guiding principle for their actions that offers a preview of what to expect.
Both Clinton and Ryan view being American as an intellectual “idea” rather than a national identity, and both support the donor-class’s agenda of open borders, which—as Bernie Sanders has explained—essentially amounts to “doing away with the concept of a nation-state.”
So Trump’s “America First” agenda is anathema to globalists such as Clinton and Ryan.
The open borders, internationalist worldview of Clinton and Ryan stands diametrically opposed to the “America first” agenda of Donald Trump, who has pledged that the needs of America and her citizens—not the desires of foreign interests—will be his priority.
“On trade, on immigration, on foreign policy, the jobs, incomes and security of the American worker will always be my first priority,” Trump has said. “America first will be the major and overriding theme of my administration.”
Ryan, a traitor to his own party and its candidate for president, hasn’t been particularly quiet about his efforts to undermine the Trump campaign.
Former Ryan advisor Dan Senor was upfront about his desire for corporate media to focus on negative news stories for Trump and not cover Trump’s comeback debate performance. Senor even encouraged members of corporate media to skew their coverage to emphasize the decade-old audio tape that Ryan was “sickened” by and to act “as though the debate never occurred.”
Yet these attempts to seemingly sabotage Trump are hardly a recent development from Ryan. Over the last several months, the Speaker has made a habit of both of overtly and subtly undermining his party’s nominee.
There’s more to the duplicity of Mr. Ryan, but this is more than enough to take in at one sitting, and it should be more than enough for dedicated conservatives to start a “Paul Ryan for Private Citizen” campaign and oust that man from the House.
