Oregon state troopers are now being called on people who fail the background checks to purchase a firearm.
Officials state that it’s a crime for people who can’t buy a gun to attempt to purchase one. Up until now they have let the law sit on the books, but that’s changing as they have begun enforcement.
Oregon state troopers are now being dispatched when a person tries to buy a gun but fails the background check. It comes after critics complained that state laws that ban certain categories of people from buying guns were not being enforced.
It’s a crime for convicted felons or people with certain known mental health problems to attempt to buy a gun. But until recently not much happened in Oregon if someone tried to skirt the law. That’s now changing, according to an internal state police training bulletin obtained by the gun rights group, Oregon Firearms Federation. Its director, Kevin Starrett, says he’s talked to two upstanding gun buyers who were questioned by state troopers after being inexplicably rejected by the background check computer.
“What they’re doing is a ridiculous waste of time, but they’re doing something and we’ve got to do something, and this is something so this is what we’re going to do,” said Starrett.

That’s because criminals don’t follow laws, so when you make gun control laws, you’re only punishing the people who have the legal right to purchase a firearm and protect themselves. Stupid.

Another waste of public resources… That’s what the background check is for. If people get rejected that aren’t allowed to own a firearm, then the system is doing it’s job. Why waste the time of officers that could be serving and protecting citizens elsewhere? This makes no sense to me. What does this accomplish other than harassing people. Obviously if they didn’t pass the background check they weren’t sold a firearm, so let them be and stop wasting tax payers money. This makes no sense. I agree with you on that Jeannette. The war on gun owners is ridiculous. There are far more responsible gun owners than there are people who are not responsible. The people who have guns that shouldn’t are the people they should be going after, but I guess that means they would actually have to do their jobs and correctly… It’s rare that you hear of a law abiding, responsible gun owners committing crimes or engaging in any mass shootings. They need to get it together….
Thats Bullcrap ! Theres some of these people that will get turned down, that have never did anything actually wrong ! Eventually this country will be plunged into another civiL war over this , and then all these little “grabastic” gunbanners that caused it, that don’t have guns are gona show up on our doorsteps whinin about how they don’t have a gun to defend their family with ! The government will use any reason to disarm the citizens. But they can commit Felonies Daily by abusing citizens. This is why I am gladly leaving America. No freedom.
I am as pro gun as they come people! This is a good thing. If you do not have a right to own one because you are a felon you should be dealt with for trying to purchase one. If the laws on the books are enforced we would not be in this mess or at least liberals wouldn’t have the talking points they currently enjoy.
