Obama Joins Facebook With a Divisive First Post


As he is wont to do, President Obama has taken advantage of a current cultural trend to advance his personal image as well as his agenda. Already having joined Twitter to much fanfare, the President has now become an official member of Facebook, posting a video of himself speaking about climate change as his first act on the social media website. This was in keeping with his professed desire to use the site as a highly-visible platform from which to “have real conversations about the most important issues facing our country”.

Of course, chances are it’s just yet another venue for him to indulge his crushing need to be liked by masses of people, much like his appearances on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show, Zach Galifianakis’ web series, and comedian Marc Maron’s podcast. At any rate, he will use it to advocate for what he believes to be the pressing issues of our time, as he did with climate change in his first post.
