Democrat and Republican liberals alike often excoriate those who think that welfare programs should not be parceled out indiscriminately, but should require something from the recipients. Back when Bill Clinton was fighting impeachment, he actually signed on to a welfare for work program, and amazingly, the welfare roles shrank!
It turns out that if people can get stuff for free, without having to do anything for it, they will. That should not be a surprise. The other thing liberals will have us believe is that welfare recipients have no responsibility for their situation. While that is certainly true in some cases, there are many more that result from poor decisions and behavior.
Starting late last year, North Carolina began requiring drug testing of new applicants for a state welfare program. A number of politicians decried the requirement as unfair, saying that it was too costly, and that it was onerous to those who would be required to take the test. The test was not universal and applied only to one program, but the results were quite surprising.
See test results on page 2:
They will be robbing us when they have nothing left
Kevin Pridemore really? and just where do you live that this is law?
I think they should start drug testing the members of the Legislature first.

Charlie Sico, if you read the article, drug tests are only costing around $2 each. That’s a pretty small price to pay, to avoid potentially spending millions on unnecessary assistance. Please keep in mind that most everyone who works to pay taxes into the system is required to submit to drug tests.
Charlie Sico, I can see that you are indeed seld righteous and a moron. The cost of the test is stated quite clearly in the article, and if paying that one disqualifies a person from receiving benefits for an extended period of time then your argument that it doesn’t save money is as full of BS as you social justice warriors are.
If they won’t stay off drugs then they don’t deserve to be subsidized by the taxpayers.
Anyone with a functional brain (which obviously excludes libertards like yourself) knows exactly how that works out. A drug user gets foodstamps then wants drugs. They go to a drug dealer and sell them their monthly allotment for $.50 on the $1.00, theteby using taxpayer money to fund their neighborhood drug dealer and still not feeding their children. This has played out constantly and as long as they are subsidized the behavior won’t change.
Yes, there are some people who actually need assistance and I have no problem helping such people, working or not, but I do have a problem funding someone so that they can feed a drug habit. You really need to wake up to the realities of life and leave your little world of rainbow fairy farts and unicorns behind.
About time!
Good
Indiana should do this too especially in Marion County
Danny McClain……if they are already working , I am sure they are already fulfilling that requirement.
