New Report: China Preparing for Preemptive Strike on US Military Bases

China emphatically demands that Taiwan eventually reunite with the mainland. That this is non-negotiable is in evidence by China’s insistence that it will use military force to invade the island nation if it were to declare independence. In addition, China has become more assertive in the waters around its land, going so far as to build artificial islands on which it can station military forces. Although the Obama administration objected, and began its “pivot” of naval forces potentially to confront an aggressive China, little was ever actually done.

In the meantime, China has been flexing its military muscles and has begun the placement of ballistic missiles in such a way as to raise the issue of whether US military bases are being threatened.

A new report by Thomas Shugart on War On The Rocks details the disturbing level to which China appears to have planned out a crippling missile attack on US military bases in the Pacific should its interests in the region be threatened.

For some time analysts have noted that China seems to be tailoring its military to counter the US’s. For example, Beijing tested its “carrier killer’ ballistic missile on a model of a US Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, while its own aircraft carrier is designed for coastal defense and will likely be destined for the South China Sea.

But Shutgart’s investigation of satellite imagery comparing China’s missile testing grounds with US bases in the region shows an eerie pattern. It appears that China’s latest missile tests have all been geared towards knocking out US carriers, destroyers, and airfields in East Asia.

This falls right in line with one of China’s core military doctrines — “active defense.”

None of this should come as a surprise. What, hopefully, is also not a surprise the is the level of sophistication of Chinese weapons. It would be the job of US intelligence sources to be on top of such things that our military would be prepared and not disadvantaged in the face of any Chinese aggression.

President Trump and his team have not been playing games with China. Hence the level of stress has been raised somewhat.

Trump and key members of his administration have chastised China for its “massive military fortress” in the South China Sea, and even threatened to cut off China’s access to the islands it has built and militarized in the region. Trump’s phone call with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen struck at the core of China’s very existence, as it could undermine China’s policy of considering Taiwan as a rogue province that must be back into Beijing’s fold.

Much of this talk could be posturing by both sides as a run-up to top-level negotiations. The United States’ Navy and missile forces are vastly greater than anything China possesses. That’s not to say that China could not inflict damages — no doubt they could. It’s just that they would pay a hideous price for such aggression.

Hopefully we do not have to have a real live test of each nation’s capabilities.
