Mitch McConnell Intent on Empowering Obama

McConnell is trying to fast track an Authorization of Military Force (AUMF) for Obama that would give him virtually unlimited power to launch military actions any time in any place, even on U.S. soil, without having to go through the inconvenience of conferring with the Congress. It may seem like a reasonable thing to grant as we face the war with ISIS and other Islamic terror groups, but it is a disaster waiting to happen.

On one hand, Obama declares that we are under no threat here at home from ISIS, even with our completely porous borders, yet on the other RINOs are seeking to give Obama power to lock down our country. One big false flag and we might not see another presidential election.

The power to declare war is intentionally difficult to get, and no one person should be able to do that without serious constraints from other elected officials. There are those who say this is merely to put this power in place to make it easier for the incoming president to have the power needed to destroy ISIS without wrangling with the congress for permission, but that is a dangerous. That is too dangerous a power to hand Obama, given his history of abusing his office.

The problem is that Obama is duplicitous in so many ways that this invitation to abuse the war powers could be manipulated for nefarious purposes, even for use on the soils of this nation. It is also very troubling that McConnell has been working on the deal in secret since he is the ultimate back room operator, and often not for the good of the nation. Obama needs to go, but McConnell should be right behind him.

Sen­ate Ma­jor­ity Lead­er Mitch Mc­Con­nell offered mem­bers a snow-week­end sur­prise late Wed­nes­day night: Quietly tee­ing up a po­ten­tial de­bate on the leg­al un­der­pin­ning for the fight against IS­IS.

After months of wor­ry­ing that such a res­ol­u­tion—known as an au­thor­iz­a­tion for the use of mil­it­ary force—would tie the next pres­id­ent’s hands, Mc­Con­nell’s move to fast-track the meas­ure sur­prised even his top deputy, Sen­ate Ma­jor­ity Whip John Cornyn, who was un­aware that Mc­Con­nell had set up the au­thor­iz­a­tion.

The AUMF put for­ward by Mc­Con­nell would not re­strict the pres­id­ent’s use of ground troops, nor have any lim­its re­lated to time or geo­graphy. Nor would it touch on the is­sue of what to do with the 2001 AUMF, which the Obama ad­min­is­tra­tion has used to at­tack IS­IS des­pite that au­thor­iz­a­tion’s in­struc­tions to use force against those who planned the 9/11 ter­ror­ist at­tacks. By con­trast, the leg­al au­thor­ity put for­ward by the ad­min­is­tra­tion last Feb­ru­ary wouldn’t au­thor­ize “en­dur­ing of­fens­ive ground com­bat op­er­a­tions” and would have ended three years after en­act­ment, un­less reau­thor­ized.

We should not trust Obama with any more power than he already has, and he has shown many times that he will go well beyond his limits if he unilaterally decides he has a better idea. And we should be equally wary of McConnell, who is an Establishment dinosaur who cannot be trusted.

There is a very good reason that Republican voters are lining up behind the likes of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, and it is because Establishment Republicans like McConnell have shown that they are only for themselves and their big business cronies, and they will stick it to the common citizen, even when it means handing over more power to Obama. That is just a very bad idea.
