Mariana Islands Governor Hopes New $1000 Gun Tax Will Serve As “Role Model” For US States

In an act of singular irony, the lawmakers that introduced the legislation named it the “SAFE Act.” Yes, because people will be much safer when they can’t defend themselves.

Sadly, it’s not just Governor Torres and his anti-gun cohorts who believe this will hurt anybody but the people it’s meant to protect. Although the Mariana Islands is the first American territory to institute such a measure, several cities have enacted similar restrictions on firearms:

“‘It’s something that none of us want and we want to make it as strict as possible,’ Torres said in a statement.

The Torres administration suggested that the new law, the Special Act for Firearms Enforcement (SAFE), could be a ‘role model’ for other U.S. states and jurisdictions.

A number of cities across the U.S., including Seattle, have already implemented new taxes and regulations on individual gun purchases.”
