The big hoopla over Donald Trump’s boycott the Republican debate on Fox News Thursday night is swirling with bombast and political intrigue. Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski is apparently as brash as Trump in proclaiming that Fox will anger advertisers and have very few viewers and can be seen as a threat or simply a estimation of Trumps’ value as a television commodity. At this late date, it appears that Trump is firm in his decision to not participate.
“You and I both know the only reason their ratings are as high as they were on the first debate is because Donald Trump was on the stage,” Lewandowski said on Good Morning America this morning with George Stephanopoulos, reminding him that it was among the highest rated cable events in history with 24 million viewers.
Lewandowski predicted in an interview with MSNBC’s Morning Joe that without Trump in the debate, Fox would get 1-2 million viewers. He also floated the option of working with another network for Trump’s proposed event to raise money for wounded veterans.
Of course, people will still watch the debate, even though Trump will certainly pull viewers away with his promised event to benefit wounded warriors and veterans, which be broadcasted at the same time. And, the case could be made that more people will watch to see what happens precisely because he is not participating. It will certainly give the other candidates a chance to make their case without the time being split with front-runner Trump, and will also allow them to attack him at a time that he is not there to respond.

But there is actually much more to the story. The power of the news media is being challenged by Trump’s refusal to appear, and some say that is a good thing. In the past, candidates would bend to network demands, even when they were unreasonable or antagonistic. While an argument can be made whether or not Fox News “Wunderkind,” Megyn Kelly was overly aggressive or was simply being a good journalist when she interviewed Trump, the fact remains that in recent years journalists have inordinately interjected themselves into the political limelight when they should have been more in the background.
Internal issues at Fox, page 2:
trump should put on his big boy pants and buck it up. he’s afraid of Megyn for all the slander he gave her. I’ve watched that debate 4 times and Megyn was fair. Trump could not handle the truth.
People are seeing this very differently than I do. Trump made a decision because he’s not man enough to face the questions of Megyn Kelly. Why does Fox get blamed for his decision? If he can’t control a situation, he’ll be a cry baby! And people either can’t or refuse to see the type of person he is!!!
I’m with youDot Bruner, i couldn’t have said it any better.
He has been disrespected by Fox ever since he announced he was running. If you have been paying attention you would have seen that fox, and the RNC were planning to ambush Trump attempting to derail him…He found out. He played poker with fox and won. Fox CEO is calling Trump’s wife and daughter BEGGING him to come to the so called “debate bashing” because they are losing Millions and Millions of advertising revenue because he will not be there. Why should someone who is a respected businessman around the world go along with a planned attack on him just so they can make money off of his participation? Trump deserves better than that. He called them on it…They played their hand and Donald Won. That’s the kind of leader we need…Guess fox hasn’t read The Art of The Deal.
Prince wo gave HILLARY a million bucks is 2nd owner of FOX
Okay so its out, Fox News Murdock wants open borders…shut FOX down, anyone who doesn’t want open borders, shut them down!
Fox News, and all news Medias, this is our election, ‘WE THE PEOPLE’S,’ let us vote for who we want and stop manipulating the facts and figures to fit your agenda.
Fox News is full of intellectual people who believe their intellect is superior to its viewers, however, we are not so stupid that we cannot see that they, and their invited guests, are out to destroy Trump. And I am sure that they are all cognizant of what they are doing, just as I am sure that their righteous egos feel entitled to discern what is best for America, better than its citizens.
Fox, and some of their quests, have not only work a plan of destruction with their words and body language, but the photos they’ve posted on facebook of Trump look crazed and unbecoming. They have not done this to the other candidates. I have never seen an all-out attack quite as vicious, in fact, criminals on their show are treated with more respect.
Megan Kelly, you are transparent cunning vindictive player in this character assassination game regardless of how your colleagues justify your actions and label you ‘professional.’ I have never watched your show after the first debate, nor will I watch Fox News anymore. And it’s not so much that I am pro-Trump as much as I am against powerful and influential organizations manipulating and misusing their positions to control and influence. That is not the role of a news station despite all the fancy words used to defend their actions.
Fox News, and all news Medias, need to be reminded that this is a country ‘of the people and by the people.’ This is ‘OUR ELECTION’ – stop trying to control it.
And Fox, it’s time to get the dictionary out and look up the definitions of ‘fair’ and ‘balanced.’
Totally agree Ann…we were strong Fox supporters and watched that station almost exclusively…when Donald put his hat in the ring …we noticed a subtle at first resistance and mockery of him…I watched the first debate and none since…I was disappointed in Megyn and the debate questions…I have paid very close attention to the Fox hosts comments and looks and felt they were out to get Trump…the stories coming out about Murdoch seem to start to explain why we have felt something was fishy at Fox…I am glad Trump declined the debate…I hope he brings the entire episode out in public …
A recent poll stated 20% of Democrats will cross party line and vote Republican because they could NOT vote for Hillary!
