The Internet has been buzzing with an article from The New Yorker that got picked up and reported by Fox News on an imminent, massive earthquake that threatens to take down the Pacific Northwest.
It seems that this mega-quake is about 75 years overdue – it has been striking the area for the last 10,000 years around every 240 years.
So it’s not a question of ‘if’, but ‘when’.
When it does strike it will take down everything west of Interstate 5, including Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Eugene, Salem, Olympia – home to around seven million people.
The coming quake will register somewhere between 8.7- 9.2 and will create a gigantic, 100ft high tsunami that will also cause considerable destruction.

Sounds a little shaky to me.
All of the analysis done so far has shown that the subduction zone is along the old continental shelf, which is usually 20-30 miles offshore. Places like Port Orford Oregon are the exception. If you look at an undersea map you will see ridges along that old continental shelf line. They also have evidence that the entire fault zone only goes off every 1000-2000 years. Usually it is on the southern end or very northern near Vancouver Island.
